Do you have a calf that: has a scour problem, is a picky eater, lacks vigor, or is in poor health?

Try SUPER START 1, we think you will like the results. SUPER START includes electrolytes to assist in replenishing fluid loss. Century Hills Industries yeast culture and Lactic acid Bacteria ingredients cause an increase in the beneficial stomach microbials, which in turn increases digestion and helps adjust the calf stomach pH by reducing the bacteria population that cause calf scours.

During periods of stress or and disease, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chlorides are lost in the urine and feces of calves. The loss of these electrolytes results in muscle, loss of control of body fluids (dehydration), depressed ability to regulate body temperature and loss of control of body acid balances. Loss of electrolytes and body fluids, for any reason, has a tremendous negative effect on normal body functions. Proper balance of body electrolytes helps body cells better utilize nutrients. During periods of stress or and disease, calves will not eat as much as they will under normal conditions. This results in calorie intake not meeting calorie needs for normal body functions.

Glucose (also called dextrose) is an energy source that is readily available to the calf. It is also the most common and most important sugar in the body. Glucose cannot be stored in the body, but is converted to its storage form, glycogen, in the animal’s muscle and liver cells. The body can also store extra glucose as fat, but fat is not readily available or easily metabolized during stress periods.

Glycogen itself is not a sugar but is similar to starch in plants. When glucose levels in the body are reduced, as with feed intake or inadequate calorie intake, the body can easily convert the stored glycogen back into glucose to be used as energy for the body cells.

Glycine is an amino acid (a building block of protein) that the cells must have to metabolize the glucose.

Many minerals are involved in electrolyte balance. Sodium and potassium are used in the electrolyte acid - based balance, to correct cell pressure balance in the body cells. With the normal transfer of nutrients to the cells and removal of waste materials from the cells and normal muscle and nerve functions, many body functions produce strong acids as waste products. Sodium and potassium are needed to "balance" the acids produced. Potassium deficiency can result in abnormal electrocardiograms. Calcium and magnesium play roles in muscle tone, ability to stand and walk, normal nerve functions well as how tissues and cells absorb and metabolize nutrients.

Chloride plays a role in appetite control, weight gain and acid base balance in the blood.

Replacing just the water that is lost will not solve the problem of body fluid loss. Electrolytes must also be replaced. Replacing just the cell water will further dilute the remaining electrolytes in the cells. Since electrolytes help maintain normal body fluids and reduce body fluid losses, calf drug medication therapy will typically stay in the body longer and be more effective. The balance of pH (acidity-alkalinity) in the intestinal tract is improved with the use of electrolytes. The pH balance has an effect on the species and growth rate of intestinal bacteria. Electrolytes play very important roles in all body activity and maintenance of body fluids. Body fluids and electrolytes are not stored and must be constantly replaced, especially in times of stress and dehydration.
